Kandyan Dance

Initiated in the year 1992, Hillwood Dance Troup has been the ambassadors of our traditional Kandyan dancing over the years. In 1992 itself the dance troupe travelled to England representing Sri Lanka for the first time and since then it has become an annual occurrence for the troupe to travel to various parts of the world, i.e: Spain, Sweden, Israel, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Germany, Thailand, Nepal, India, etc., displaying our unique traditional dances. Kandyan dance troupe receive annual invitations to participate in international folk festivals in Thailand and Nepal. Hillwood Dance Troupe is the one to beat as in all Zonal, District and All Island competitions, Hillwood manages to secure 1st or 2nd place every year.

Student Christian Movement

Known as the Hillwood Christian Union initially, Student Christian Movement is one of the major societies where many events and functions are made possible within the school and beyond. Hillwood Sunday, which is the closing programme of Hillwood Week and a highlight of the year, is organized by the SCM. Annual Carol Service, Carol singing at Children’s homes and elders’ homes in and around Kandy and distribute gifts to them, organizing Easter Services, etc., are done with great enthusiasm.

Annual SCM day, Bible quiz competitions, Bible essay competitions are organized with the participation of other schools and the SCM members take part in the events organized by other institutions in order to build up new relationships among the community.

Heritage Club

Hillwood with a history of 126 years behind her, is an institution where the inheritance is discussed and celebrated creating a deep sense of belonging and patriotism in a child. Heritance Club is the base in this endevour and members have their annual National Day celebrations, workshops, seminars, competitions, etc., with the participation of historians, archivists, university lecturers, etc., to re-live and celebrate our unique and rich Sri Lankan culture and traditions.

Sinhala Debate Circle

Debate Circle is popular among the social and political enthusiasts, who wish to develop their skills and knowledge on specific global and domestic issues. Debaters develop a sense of ownership of the world and a sense of empowerment as they learn to express their thoughts and concerns. Help build an identity for individuals. Every year the Circle organizes their inter-house debate competitions, inter-school competitions, and take part in the competitions organized by the surrounding schools.

Little Friends

They learn to “Lend a Hand” while taking charge of their own activities. ‘Little Friends’ is for girls within the age group of 7 ~ 12 yrs and is a platform to develop their skills to work independently and responsibly. Little Friends enjoy great adventures, i.e: pack holidays, outdoor cooking, going on field trips, helping others, earning badges, etc.

Buddhist Society

Initiated on the 2nd March, 1962, the Buddhist Society is one of the major societies due to its high membership. Purpose of the society is to bring about a wholesome young generation inculcated with good virtues.

Buddhist Society encourages ‘giving’ with their alms giving programmes and dansal organized throughout the year and during special occasions such as Vesak and Poson months. Being in the close proximity to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, members get the opportunity to take part in ‘Dalada Maligawa’ activities as well.

The annual Islamic Day is celebrated with much enthusiasm and grandeur with the participation of many schools in and around Kandy, where the members have friendly competitions and prize presentations.

Hobby Club

Revamped and regrouped in 2012, Hobby Club is becoming popular among the students for its variety of activities.

Taking a break from the heavy educational curriculum, members of the Hobby Club enjoy and improve their handcraft skills, culinary skills, needlecraft, pottery painting, etc.. Attend demonstrations organized by professional institutions, i.e: Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management, Hotel Ozo, etc., and display their extraordinary skills at their annual exhibition.

Yowun Gaweshikawo School Organization is an affiliate of the Youth Explorers’ Society of Sri Lanka and the prime purpose of this club is to give the members an opportunity to enjoy and discover Mother Nature.

Visiting places of echo-diversity on monthly basis and exploring the wonders of nature, the fauna and flora unique to this island, weekly lectures on environment, annual hiking competitions & first-aid demonstrations are in the agenda for these enthused youngsters.
